Invasive Plants Symposium

Plant introduction and improvement are the foundations of modern agriculture and horticulture. However, certain introduced plant species can become invasive, spreading into natural areas where they displace native plants and alter ecosystems.

Learn how to identify invasive species, how to use native plants effectively in your landscape plans, and what is being done to combat and EVICT INVASIVES!

Keynote speaker, Jil Swearingen, Regional IPM Coordinator at the National Park Service and author of Invasive Plants of the Eastern United States begins the day with her talk Phyto-Terrorism in the American Landscape.

Dr. Emile De Vito, Manager of Science and Stewardship at the New Jersey Conservation Foundation follows up with The Conspiracy between Alien Species and Deer in New Jersey Forests – Can We Break Up this Mob and Restore Our Forests?

In the afternoon, Dr. Randi Eckel, owner of Toadshade Wildflower Farm in Frenchtown, NJ, will offer splendid suggestions for gardening with native plants in her slide show Everything Old Is New Again! Perennial Native Plants for Garden, Field and Forest.

Finally, a panel of experts, led by Mark A. Madsil, head of the newly formed New Jersey Invasive Species Council and Senior Policy Advisor for the DEP, will offer examples of current best practices in the war against invasive plants.

This program is for gardeners, landscape and nursery professionals, environmentalists, public gardens staff and everyone who loves a forest. Attendees receive a copy of Plant Invaders of the Mid-Atlantic Natural Areas.
