Children's Activities

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum have regular educational programs for children from toddlers through junior high school.

Activities are grouped by age:

"Branching Out!", the 2008 gardening program for children ages 5 through 13, will begin taking registrations at the beginning of February. This year will mark the 34th gardening season which will run Saturdays in the spring and two days a week in the summer. Gardeners may attend spring, summer or both sessions. Garden Sprouts, for preschoolers ages 3 through kindergarten. Many new Spring / Summer 2008 programs may be found below.
Tack House Crafts - Tack House Crafts returns to the Haggerty Education Center! Every Sunday, April through October, children 5+ may create a seasonally-themed craft in the Carriage House from 1pm-4pm. Just show your membership card and the activity is free. Non-family members may participate at a cost of $1 per child. The crafts are easy and no reservation is necessary.

ATTENTION SCOUT LEADERS

Girl Scouts! Did you know the Morris Area Girl Scout Council has its own Gardening Badge for Brownies and Juniors? Scouts can earn this badge or a number of others in a workshop at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

Boy Scouts! Gwen Montgomery, Education Assistant is a counselor for the Boy Scout Gardening Badge.

GARDEN SPROUTS

These programs, for preschoolers ages 3 through kindergarten, feature outdoor garden walks, crafts or other learning activities that will introduce young children to the world of plants and nature. Dress for indoor and outdoor time. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The fee is $6.00 for members and $9.00 for non-members. Pre-registration is required, programs start on time and last an hour.

Wed May 21 1:00p - 2:00p	Sprouts - Plant Zoo Plants are named after all kinds of things including animals. Look at plants and flowers and try to guess their names. Read about Garden Sprouts and all the other children's programs on the Children's Programs page.
Tue May 27 1:00p - 2:00p	Sprouts - That's Crazy, Man! In the cracks of the sidewalk, growing up a tree trunk, or peeking out from the side of your house, plants can be found in all sorts of strange places. Sun Jun 1 Sundays through June 29 1:00p - 4:00p	Tack House Crafts - Explore and More Plant exploration is the focus this month and young explorers can make and decorate a simple compass to use and take home. Sun Jul 6 1:00p - 4:00p	Tack House Crafts - Rain, Rain Come Today If you want a terrific garden this summer, you'll need rain. Make a rain stick to summon the rain and learn what cultures still rely on these to help their gardens. Sun Jul 13 1:00p - 3:00p Concert 3:00p - 4:30p	The Fairies Will Return This Summer! Join us on July 13th for Garden Fairy Day when we ready the gardens for the return of the flower fairies to The Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Discover what materials and flowers attract fairies to the garden, why you need fairies in your garden, and get inspired! Families (children 5+) are welcome to construct fairy homes in the Sylvan Terrace - houses summer fairies will visit briefly and then move on. Staff will be available to show you to your building site and will supply each builder or building team with appropriate supplies sure to make your house the most inviting one in the glade. Fairy houses will remain on display for the month of July. Following the house-raising, renowned tin whistle and flute player L.E. McCullough and award-winning Irish fiddler John Killackey will play music sure to draw fairies. This special concert will run from 3pm to 4:30pm.
