The World at Willowwood: Plant Exploration - Past, Present, & Future

From the Wardian Age (named after the Wardian cases used by plant explorers) through the 20th Century and into the present, stories of plant exploration have played a central role in telling the green history of the world. The Willowwood Arboretum has a story to tell as well. As hosts of this extraordinary afternoon, The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum continue their mission to support the horticultural facilities of the Morris County Park Commission and invite you to join in the 100th Anniversary celebration of the Willowwood Arboretum.

The Willowwood Arboretum, comprised of approximately 131 acres of horticultural plant collections, meadows, and native woodland, is located on a former farm dating back to the 1700’s. In addition to the striking scenic landscape and collection of plants and historic structures, the Willowwood Arboretum is historically important as a garden and plant collection created by brothers Henry and Robert Tubbs, who bought the property in 1908, and Benjamin Blackburn, a horticultural professor at Rutgers University and Drew University who helped to establish the site as a public arboretum in 1950.

The day begins with an optional tour of the Willow School, a national model in education and the environment, led by co-founder Mark Biedron. The building in which the lectures will be held, “The Barn,” was the first New Jersey building awarded the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum Certification. The first lecture, “The Willowwood & Morris Arboreta: Partners in Plant Exploration,” will present highlights of plant exploration trips to South Korea, China, Armenia, and the Republic of Georgia by Paul Meyer. Mr. Meyer is the E. Otto Haas Director of the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania and a leader in the field of plant exploration. For over 20 years, the Morris Arboretum has shared plants with the Willowwood Arboretum that have resulted from their plant exploration endeavors.

For more information about plant explorers, check out our Winter, 2007 Virtual Gardener column, aptly entitled, Plant Explorers.

Registration includes an E.H. Wilson plant and a Willowwood Centennial tote bag.

You may request a program brochure by calling 973.326.7603. Seating is limited. Please register early.

Please note that this program takes place at the Willow School and at the Willowwood Arboretum in Chester, NJ.
