Announcements as of October 12, 2012

The Friends of Frelinghuysen Arboretum are proud to host dozens of events in the coming weeks, ranging from exhibits to photo classes to tours to informative programs on gardens and horticulture. Our full program is found on the Events Page of our website. Please browse there at your leisure, but here are some upcoming events that we would like to highlight. First Freeze Tonight

Vegetable Storage

Tonight we can expect the first freeze. Draping a sheet over your tender plants can help to protect them, but only if you do it by 3 or 4 pm, so that some of the day’s heat is trapped inside. Use stakes to hold the sheet up so that it does not damage the plant material. You can also make a simple u-shaped hoop with sturdy wire or coat hangers and lay the sheet across that.

And speaking of freeze – here is a neat chart about keeping vegetables thru the winter (click on the image at right).

Annual Chrysanthemum Show and Sale

This weekend: It’s the Mum Show – Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. See these seasonal beauties, bred to perfection – Free and Open to the Public

Berried Treasure

Fall’s answer to flowers is berries. Luminous and long-lasting or sparkling delights gobbled by avian friends, every garden needs a berried plant. Learn about these Berried Treasures on Saturday morning, October 20.

There will be plants from the famed Broken Arrow Nursery in Hamden CT to buy and plant now.

Ireland Trip Preview

Slides and information about the 2013 Friends' Trip to Ireland await you Saturday afternoon, October 20th. Join frequent traveler, Sue Acheson for a fun presentation.

Paint It Black

Paint It Black

Saying goodbye is hard, but as you evaluate this past season’s garden – did it have enough drama? Re-think “basic black” at Paint It Black on October 28 with Superintendent Lesley Parness.

Families – get off the couch! Take a Family Hike: Big Trees, Changing Trees, our October Scavenger Hunt. Sunday Oct. 28th.

A Pressing Matter

With all the fading flowers, aren’t you tempted to press some? Wouldn’t you like to learn how to capture and document your garden’s history with a herbaria? Learn about herbaria from Lauren Spitz from the Chrysler Herbarium at Rutgers University and take home a mounted specimen on November 4 in A Pressing Matter.

Gingerbread Tips & Techniques

If you are planning to enter Gingerbread Wonderland, or just making a Gingerbread House for your family's pleasure, learn from a pro at Gingerbread Tips and Techniques on October 27 with resident Chef Cynthia Triolo.

The Friends Are Going to Ireland in 2013

And you are invited to join in on a wonderful tour of Irish gardens. Join us on Saturday October 20 for the Friends Trip to Ireland Preview where veteran traveler Sue Acheson will describe the tour and all the details, including itinerary, cost, accomodations, etc. The Preview is free, but we ask that you register in advance.
