Announcements as of December 26, 2012

The Friends of Frelinghuysen Arboretum are proud to host dozens of events in the coming weeks, ranging from exhibits to photo classes to tours to informative programs on gardens and horticulture. The New Year is fast approaching!

Have you registered for the Members Only New Year’s Party on Sunday, January 6th yet? Please do so now, by clicking right here.

It’s free, but you must be registered and yes, you must be a member!

Archetypes of the Rare Book Collection

Another “Members Only” program is “Archetypes of the Rare Book Collection” on January 27.

If you think a program about old books is snooze material, think again. Superintendent Lesley Parness shares books from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries with you and every book has a fascinating story. Proceeds from the program are used for the important job of book conservation.

Kokedama Workshop

The January 18 KOKEDAMA workshop is filling up. Come make a Japanese hanging string garden with us.

Cooking Series - Edible Sprouts

Join Chef Cynthia Triolo as she explores the world of Sprouts on January 20.

Affiliate Programs

Our Affiliate member offerings for January include these evening meetings for which no registration is needed:

• January 8 Great Swamp Bonsai Society
• January 8 North American Butterfly Association (make like a butterfly and flit from one meeting to another)
• January 9 African Violet Club of Morris County - how to press African Violets

Winter Soaps

We’ll soon have a new selection of hand made soaps from Secret Garden Soaps of Madison. Featured winter scents include Snow and Ginger.

Garden Tips

This is the month for applying an anti-dessicant to bigleaf Hydrangeas, evergreens, rhododendron, azalea, boxwood and even climbing roses. Pick a day when the temperature is above 40 degrees and be sure to spray the upper and lower branches too. Wilt-Pruf has been a popular product for a long time and now there is another choice – Moisture-In, produced by Liquid Fence. Both do the job of reducing damage from drying winds and winter sun scorch.
