December Meeting Highlights:
The club's Holiday Party and Auction went well. A nice selection of tasty morsels were provided by members and all in attendance seemed to enjoy the chance to get together. David Yedwab served as auctioneer and we appreciated his expertise and humor. Here are a few images taken during the auction and "snack time"... (Please click on an image for a larger view)

January Meeting Preview:
According to Mark (our President), the January meeting will feature a "Beginner's Forum". In general, this will be a roundtable discussion of sorts where members can bring their questions and perhaps a tree or two. Our more experiences members will provide answers and assistance where possible. Topics will range from chosing soil, planting, some basic styling hints, etc. We also have several videos available that may be viewed, providing a TV is available at meeting time.
While we had planned to continue serializing Fred Aufschläger's paper, Bonsai Containers as Ceramic Art, over the next several newsletters, we received a multitude of requests to have it available all at once. So, we've put it all together in two separate formats, one for owners of MS Word (.doc) and the second as an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf). Here are links to the two documents. You may download whichever one you find most appropriate for your use.

For those who are unable to access the paper in these formats, we will have several printed copies available for paid-up members at the January meeting.
January Tips:
Things start getting pretty bleak at this time of year around here and there is little that you can do or needs to be done. The main task is to protect the trees from severe winter weather. If you have not already sheltered your trees, by all means, do it now! Don't disturb any heeled-in cuttings until at least the end of February.
Check to see that the soil in trees that have been under a winter cover have not dried out. If it appears to have lost moisture, water only to the point of the soil being slightly damp. Trees in the open will not generally require watering and may even require protection from heavy rains. A thick blanket of snow will do no harm to the larger trees in the open. If a thaw becomes rapid, you should consider removing some of the snow to prevent an over abundance of water.
Start planning your repotting schedule for Feburary. Make a list of trees that need repotting and if you don't have plenty of supplies on hand (Soil, Pots, etc.) now is a good time to order what you're going to need.
