What is the Great Swamp Bonsai Society?

The Great Swamp Bonsai Society is a club for anyone interested in the Japanese art of growing miniature trees in pots. We welcome anyone of any age or background,  whether you are a beginner or have years of experience, or even if you simply admire the trees and enjoy participating as a spectator.

GSBS welcomes you and hopes you will attend our monthly gatherings to share your questions, problems, expertise, and enthusiasm.

What goes on at the meetings?

You'll meet a wide variety of people who share your interest in Bonsai, including everyone from novices to master artists and instructors.

You'll have endless opportunities to exchange information about bonsai training techniques, tools, supply and plant sources, conventions, instructional books and videos, plant care, pest problems, and much more.

You'll be informed on the dates and locations of various bonsai events and conventions and related activities held locally, nationally and internationally.

Several times a year we host a lecture by a renowned bonsai master, who will demonstrate his or her techniques in person. Some of the finished trees are raffled off; other times, members bring their own trees and, for a fee, participate in a workshop with a limited number of paying participants, while the rest of us participate only as spectators.

How do I join?

Just show up! Membership dues are $40.00 per year, but anyone is welcome to attend meetings as our guest until such time as you decide to join us officially.

Anyone can receive our monthly newsletter by email or paid members have the option of receiving them via regular mail. The newsletter announces our upcoming meetings, events and provides timely tips for the care of your trees.

Each meeting focuses on a particular topic in bonsai, with lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and everybody has an opinion!

Paid membership to the Society allows you discounts to certain suppliers of bonsai trees and other materials.

When are the meetings?

The Great Swamp Bonsai Society meets in the classrooms on the lower floor of the Haggerty Education Center at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, East Hanover Avenue, just opposite the Morris County Library [973-326- 7600].

Meetings are usually on the second Tuesday of every month, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm., but check the calendar of events  for changes in scheduling and other local special events.
