News from the Arboretum

Blackburn Scholarship Application Available

In January we announced that the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum has partnered with County College of Morris regarding awards of the Benjamin C. Blackburn Scholarship for 2010.

We are now pleased to announce that the application period is now open. Completed applications must be mailed and postmarked by March 31, 2010. The winners will be notified by May 3, 2010.

Interested students should download the instructions and application form and contact the Financial Aid Office of CCM.

Horticulture Internships at the Arboretum

Horticulture internships are available at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum for the 2010 growing season. Interns participate in all aspects of garden and arboretum management including planting, mulching, watering, weeding, pruning, fertilizing, mowing, propagating and record keeping. Interns rotate through the different specialty gardens and collections and may select an area of concentration. Applicants should possess a keen interest in horticulture and must enjoy physical work outdoors.

Two of our past interns wrote an article about their experiences, which you can read here.

To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to Kate Gutierrez, Morris County Park Commission, P.O. Box 1295, Morristown, NJ 07962. For additional information, call (973) 326-7629 or e-mail kgutierrez@morrisparks.net.

The Morris County Park Commission is an equal opportunity employer.

Bus Trip to the Ladew Topiary Gardens

Ladew Topiary GardensThe Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum are particularly lucky this year to have a number of excellent programs including a bus trip to the Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton MD.

The Garden Club of America called the Ladew, "the most outstanding topiary garden in America." We have some pictures of the Ladew in our gallery (click on the image on the right) courtesy of Sally Hemsen. You can also visit their website at http://www.ladewgardens.com/.

Keep watch of our website for registration information about this exciting trip.

Second Plant Sale Video - Trees & Shrubs

There is only a bit more than two months until the 15th Annual Friends Plant Sale. The snow will be gone and your garden will be alive with activity.

To help you plan your Plant Sale activities, we are pleased to note that the second Plant Sale Video is now available on the Plant Sale Page. Go to the page and you will see the video at the top. Click on it and sit back and enjoy the highlights of trees and shrubs that we expecially like.

Remember to check out the On-line Plant List -- there are over 250 plants on list now and it grows every day.

Matilda' Tea Postponed Due To Expected Snow

With the National Weather Service predicting 8-10 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow, we have postponed the Annual Matilda's Tea for Children, Hats Off to Matilda from tomorrow to its snow date of February 20th.

There are still some tickets left, so take this opportunity to sign up for you and your daughter or granddaughter. It's a wonderful event for all.

Plant List Growing

The 15th Annual Friends Plant Sale (click on the image on the right for the Plant Sale page) is only a few months off. Co-chairs, Sue Acheson and llona Ontscherenki are deep into the ordering process from our various wholesalers and nurseries. Volunteers are busily planning the catering for the Members-only Party and Sale as well as arranging the raffle prizes. Start checking out the on-line plant list for the wonderful, robust and beautiful specimens available here at garden center prices.

I can hardly wait.

Browser Problems

This is not a horticulture-related post, but rather a warning about browser vulnerability. You have probably seen lots of news about the attacks suffered by Google in China. What you may not realize is that the attacks exploited a set of vulnerabilities in the most commonly used web browser, Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Computer experts have long warned about the need to keep software up-to-date, and this latest set of attacks has actually led several governments (France, Germany, Australia, to name a few) to warn their citizens to stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

I looked at the statistics gathered on our website so far this month about the kind of browsers used by our guests and found this:

  • MSIE version 8.0 - 22.7%
  • MSIE version 7.0 - 28.3%
  • MSIE version 6.0 - 15.0%
  • Firefox (all versions) - 17.5%
  • Apple Safari (all versions) - 12.2%
  • Other - 5%

Plant Sale Planning Begins

As most of you well know, the Friends Annual Plant Sale is a really big event, featuring thousands of exquisite, collectible plants, dozens of roving Plant Experts and, for members attending the Members-only Party and Sale Friday evening, lots of good food and drink together with first-choice of the plant material. The dates are Friday, April 30th for the Members-only Party and Saleand Saturday May 1st for the Public Plant Sale.

Well, the Plant Sale Committee has lots to do to get ready (think of selecting and ordering the plants, planning the catering, organizing the raffle, etc.) and so has begun its work. The Plant Sale Page is alive and has its first posting, including a nice video of past plant sales. Be sure to let me know what you think of the video (webmaster@arboretumfriends.org) -- we hope to do more and want to get them right.
