2011 Scotland Trip Meeting on September 12th

The Friends are sponsoring a trip to Scotland in May / June 2011 in celebration of our 40th anniversary. We will visit many public and private gardens, sightsee in the south of Scotland and attend Garden Scotland, their big garden show of the year.

All the trip details will be discussed at an event at the Arboretum on Sunday, September 12th from 2pm - 4pm. Food, bagpipes, slides and more!

Space (and food) is limited, so call to reserve a space at the meeting.

We will start taking deposits for the trip itself at the meeting, so if you think you are interested, bring a check. The deposit is $500 and is refundable through the fall. Again, all the details will be discussed at the meeting.

We look forward to seeing you there.

A Beautiful Day at the Arboretum

Late August Pictures - August 28, 2010 There is a hint of Fall in the air, as bright sun and clear skies bath the late-Summer blossoms. Take some time this weekend for a walk through Morris County's beautiful Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

Scotland Trip Itinerary

map_of_scotland-thThe Friends turn 40 next year and have put together a trip to Scotland in celebration. We will focus on the south of Scotland, an area of wide-ranging climate. The gardens are equally diverse displaying everything from tropical to alpine. Read more below for details of this exciting trip and come to our program preview on Sunday September 12th at the Arboretum. Check regularly the Scotland trip section here on the website as we add more details.

The map on the right gives an overview of our route, showing each of our overnight destinations. Click on the map, by the way, to see a larger version. The remainder of this article will talk about these overnight locations and what we will see at each stop along our route. A much more detailed, daily itinerary with many weblinks may be found in the section entitled, Scotland Itinerary. Click there to browse through each day's activities.

Glasgow

On arrival in Glasgow, we will board our bus for a city tour of Scotland's second city. It is full of fine examples of old and new architecture, including medieval churches and fine late Victorian structures. Following the tour of the city, we will motor southeast to the small town of Peebles, where we will relax, dine and overnight at the beautiful Macdonald Cardrona Hotel & Golf Course. Northwest New Jersey's Skylands

The Northwet corner of New Jersey is filled with diverse geography, picturesque towns, parks and varied activities. Our friends at http://www.njskylands.com/ (who list many of the Friends' activities) would like to call attention to their site which provides maps, tour guides and event calendars for the region.

By the way, our Links page includes this and many other links we think may be of interest to our guests.

August Activities

The gardens are taking on the late-summer greens. Volunteer Phil Dahlen notes the Arboretum "is still beautifully clothed in many flowers." See his latest update of What's in Bloom" here on the site.

Our latest email newsletter went out a few days ago (if you are not signed up for it, click here to find out how). Here are three of the highlighted events:

Adult Beginner's Flower Arranging Class

Tuesday, August 10th, 6pm - 8pm

Everyone should know the basics of a good flower arrangement. Even the simplest garden or cut flowers from your local market can be made into a charming arrangement. With a little knowledge, practice and the right container, you can make an artistic design. Have fun while learning!

Instructor Marge Hulstrunk has been a professional floral designer for over 20 years, and she will cover all the basics so you will have confidence in yourself as an arranger. You will have a new appreciation for flower arranging after this workshop. Please register early as class size is limited.

Friday Night Family Movies - WALL- E

Enjoy viewing this family classic on a big screen on the Arboretum's Great Lawn. Picnics are welcome. Bring a blanket or chairs. Date: Friday, August 27 - No advance registration needed. Time: 7:30 pm. Arboretum opens at 6pm Read the rest of the post »

Abundant Midsummer Blooms

The recent rain helped the plants at the Arboretum put on extra blooms for our viewing pleasure. Volunteer Phil Dahlen sent me his bi-weekly update of the In Bloom list, so take a look at the list and come on to the Arboretum one morning before it gets too hot!

Enjoy your summer.

Contributed Photos

Pictures posted here on the website of the Arboretum allow many to share a visitor's pleasure. Check out our Picture Gallery where the newest contributions (from Ronnie Sabloff) were posted today.

We welcome pictures from everyone showing some of their favorite places at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

Friday Night at the Movies

We sent out some mixed signals on whether advance registration is needed for our Friday Night at the Movies shows, the first of which is this Friday evening, July 16th. To be quite concise, no advance registration is needed. Just bring your family, your membership card and $5 for the whole carload of you ($10 without a membership card). Sorry for the confusion.

This should be a fun event for all and we hope to see lots of our friends there.

A Gardener's Eye

Closups - July 10, 2010Noted garden photographer Alan L. Detrick spoke yesterday on the topic, A Gardener's Eye, in which he showed a multi-media presentation of many of his images and discussed his approach to creating them.

Several of us in the audience brought cameras and, inspired by the talk, wandered the gardens afterwards avidly photographing. I put some of my shots in our photo gallery (which you can see by clicking on the image at right) and invite you to send me some of yours for posting there as well. Email them to me at webmaster@arboretumfriend.org.

Just a reminder: Alan's images are on display in the Haggerty Center Gallery throughout July.
