Sun Jan 1 | Winter Weekend Photo Scavenger HuntLooking for something to do outside during the winter weekends? Grab a camera or phone and stop by the Haggerty Education Center for a nature photo scavenger hunt. Starting in January and changing monthly, visitors can pick up the list, head outside and shoot away. Take a picture of every item, return to the Education Center and pick up your prize. Scavenger lists and prizes will change every month.

Sat Feb 4 | Matilda's Tea Party - Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice
What better way to spend a cold winter afternoon than sipping tea with your favorite young person at the 9th Annual Matilda's Tea? What other kinds of beverages might Matilda have imbibed when she lived here at Whippany Farm as a child? Learn how to fold fancy napkins, make a variety of tea sachets and other 19th century beverages. Then your youngster can host a tea of her own! Everyone will enjoy sampling teas, pastries and tea sandwiches both savory and sweet. Dress up and put on your best manners as well! Recommended for age 6 and up. His company is a mail order ivy nursery that he started over 15 years ago and now grows more than 600 cultivars. Mr. Windle is also the Director of Research and the International Registrar of Hedera for the American Ivy Society. He will be bringing many new and unusual varieties for sale after his talk. Eleanor will provide you with materials such as smalti, millefiori, metallic Van Gogh glass, stained glass, mirror glass, and glitter tiles to create your one-of-a-kind six inch trivet but feel free to bring any items from home to incorporate into your piece. with Chef and Master Gardener Cynthia TrioloBeginning in January, The Friends and Whole Foods Market in Madison are sponsoring a Cooking Series for Teens with our resident Chef and Master Gardener Cynthia Triolo. Do you have a teen who is interested in cooking? Could they be the next Julia or Emeril? Perhaps they are getting close to leaving the nest to fend for themselves. These hands on classes will teach your son or daughter some useful skills that they will carry with them far into the future. Cynthia has been teaching cooking for more than 20 years to young adults and is the former owner of the Rose City Bakery Cafe in Madison. At the end of each class we will sit down together and enjoy the fruits of our labors. All recipes are provided and because these classes are hands on, they are limited to 12 and early registration is a must! Appropriate for teens in grades 7 and up. Please bring an apron and long hair must be tied back. In this hands-on cooking class, we'll make our own tortillas and turn them into tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas and burritos. It's a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon: learn to cook something new, taste some great food and get inspired to try the recipes at home. Cynthia has been teaching cooking to both children and adults for over 20 years and her classes always sell out. She was trained in New York and Paris and worked at several of New Jersey's best restaurants, hotels and catering companies. She also owned the Rose City Bakery Café in Madison for over 10 years prior to teaching at the Arboretum. Whole Foods Market in Madison sponsors the classes and provides all the high quality ingredients used. The ultimate comfort food, casseroles can either be a side dish or the main attraction at the family meal. The resounding success of last year's conference led us to delve even deeper this year with more practical applications and an impressive list of speakers on topics important to Community Gardeners. The Conference, co-sponsored again this year with Rutgers NJAES Cooperative Extension, will also feature moderated roundtable discussions for gardeners, coordinators and activists providing a forum for solutions to specific challenges. What a cure for the winter doldrums! We will be leaving from the Arboretum at 11:00 am, feel free to bring your lunch on the bus and please be prompt. Water and a sweet will be provided. Thus we can all prepare "to be whisked away on the tranquil winds of the Islands of Aloha". An all new show lay-out, display gardens, daily wine tastings, and special events round out the attractions. Remember to wear good walking shoes! Wed Mar 28 | Benjamin Blackburn Scholarship TeaThis year's speaker is Andrea Filippone, landscape designer and former professor at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. Ms. Filippone's program, "Boxwood, Deer, and the Aesthetics of Sustainability," showcases her unique approach to becoming a better and greener gardener by focusing on design principles that enhance the health and beauty of the environment. Her office and gardens in Pottersville, NJ include a five acre boxwood nursery, a closed-loop composting system and solar powered glass greenhouses. Won't this be the perfect antidote to a long winter and a wonderful way to celebrate spring's arrival! There will be lovely garden antiques for sale as well as a beautifully prepared tea for all to enjoy. The proceeds from the tea fund the Benjamin Blackburn Scholarship which is awarded annually to County College of Morris students in the Horticulture and Landscape Technology program.
