Two of the gardens belong to the founders of Seibert and Rice, the leading American importer of handmade terracotta planters and urns from Italy and were designed by famed landscape architect Richard Hartlage. One was designed by award-winning landscape designer Susan Cohan. Included in the mix are ruins, ponds, espaliers, firepits and pergola. Sun Oct 3 | Frelinghuysen Arboretum Gesneriad Society Show & SaleThe annual Gesneriad Show features exhibits of blooming and non-blooming gesneriad plants. This year's theme is "Gesneriads on the Menu". The show will feature arrange- ments of plants and cuttings, photography, crafts as well as a plant sale offering a wide range of gesneriads and small houseplants suitable for terrariums. Sun Oct 3 | Designing Small GardensJoin Diane Guidone, an award winning landscape designer, for her presentation on designing smaller garden spaces. Diane will cover many design concepts and how they relate to small gardens. Topics such as plot assessment, the use of line and shape, illusion, definition and pattern, proportions, sweeping curves, and focal points will be thoroughly examined, followed by a discussion of which plants to use to achieve different design styles. Diane has designed garden spaces for over a decade, both in Europe and the United States. She received her formal training in horticulture and garden design from The English Gardening School at the Chelsea Physic Garden in London, England. Diane has won several awards for her designs, many of which have been featured in both digital and print media. Register by September 18th. Location: Haggerty Center. Wed Oct 6 | Junior Master Gardeners Fall ProgramJunior Master Gardeners is for young people in grades 3-5. Kids needn't have taken any other youth horticulture classes at the Arboretum but they must be willing to get dirty, go outside no matter what, help others, and have fun. This year's JMG class will focus on specific areas and collections at the Arboretum and the changes throughout the seasons. At the end of the year, young gardeners will participate in a plant focused service project based on what they've learned, and along the way they will become certified Junior Master Gardeners. Junior Master Gardeners was created by the University Cooperative Extension, the same organization that coordinates the Master Gardener program in each state in the U.S. - a program known for it's educational outreach and service to the community. JMG will begin Wednesday, October 6 and meet every other Wednesday throughout the school year from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The cost is $150 per child for members or $175 per child for non-members. Come learn the easy steps you can take now to have a garden that's ready to plant with spring vegetables in March. Find that spot in your yard that gets 6 or more hours of sunlight a day and start dreaming. Virginia Lamb, composting guru and environmental educator, will cover topics that include soil preparation and amendments, cover crops and mulching, and seed and plant selection for successive crops. Sat Oct 9 | New Jersey State Chrysanthemum Society ShowThe New Jersey State Chrysanthemum Society Show features thirteen different varieties of chrysanthemum blooms. Included in the show are over 250 blooms of the incredible football mums as well as a selection of potted garden mums, each judged and awarded according to the National Chrysanthemum Society standards. Chrysanthemum growers and experts will be on hand to answer questions and give growing advice. This show is open for public participation by submitting an entry at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum on Friday, October 8 between the hours of 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Using maps and a scavenger hunt list, families will search for a variety of seeds and leaves all over the arboretum. Families will pot up and take home all seeds they find and everyone goes home with info on ways to identify trees in their own backyards. Home Garden Club of Morristown presents Steve Kristoph, well-known New Jersey landscape designer and plantsman, who will talk about the best new plants and shrubs for New Jersey gardens. He will also offer plants from his nursery for sale after the lecture. 






A special "Opening Night Party" is held on Friday, December 3 for members of The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Guests enjoy a "first look" at these much anticipated displays and seasonal refreshments. What a wonderful holiday gift membership in the Friends would make for that special family with young children on your holiday list!
