The New Jersey Daffodil Society/American Daffodil Society Northeast Region show, scheduled from Thursday, April 22 to Saturday, April 24, has been cancelled. We regret any inconvenience or disappointment this might cause.
Ray Rogers Enjoy familiar trumpet daffodils, fragrant jonquillas, lush double daffodils, and more, and discover the intriguing diversity among the miniature and historic selections. The show also includes cut and potted specimens of trees, shrubs, and other plants that bloom along with daffodils. For more information contact Ray Rogers at (732) 249-9282 or ayro@optonline.net. Third Annual Tu B'Shevat Celebration 1027
Just as the American Arbor Day is dedicated to trees, Tu B'Shevat is the Jewish "birthday celebration" of trees. In Israel, it is a national holiday that occurs when the trees are in bloom and bearing fruit and nuts. Held on or around the 15th day of the month of Shevat, Tu B'Shevat marks the birthday of trees planted in that year. In Biblical times, farmers used this date to keep track of when they could harvest fruit from their trees and also for tax-keeping purposes. More than 300 years ago, the custom of celebrating Tu B'Shevat with a seder, or ceremonial dinner, was added to the holiday's tradition.
At 1 pm, join singer-storyteller Uncle Eye for an interactive environmental program of silly songs, rubber chickens and our favorite Tu B'Shevat hero, Captain Tree. Uncle Eye is Ira Scott Levin, a lyricist, composer and recording artist who has appeared on PBS, at the International Jewish Music Festival and Edinburgh's Fringe Festival. See him at www.uncleeye.com.
Following the 40 minute long concert, staff from the Jewish Community Center Metrowest will explain the holiday and offer many activities appropriate for young children including crafts, storytelling and sampling of traditional foods of the season. Arboretum staff will help visitors pot up a tree sapling and provide care instructions to insure that the tree survives the winter indoors and is ready to plant when our western hemisphere's spring rolls around.

Marching to Their Own Drum
Recommended for ages 13-Adult- The Shaman's Apprentice - Ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin's quest to preserve the ancient wisdom of the Amazonian shamans is interwoven with rainforest legend and western science in this 54 minute long documentary. Dr. Plotkin seeks to capture the ancient plant wisdom of the shamans before their knowledge and their world is extinct.
- The Close to Nature Garden - Japan's revolutionary gardening guru Masanobu Fukuoka's unique approach to agriculture is detailed in this 24 minute long documentary. Filmed in 1982, it is more relevant than ever, especially in view of genetically modified seeds. A simple quote from Fukuoka "The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings," is a good example of his philosophy.
- Circle of Plenty - John Jeavons is widely recognized as the "father of permaculture." Meet him and his co-workers at Common Ground in this 1987 film about a way to think and to grow crops that has finally come of age.

An American Gardener at Great Dixter--What's "Great" About It! 1079
The Watnong Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) invites garden enthusiasts to a free lecture on Sunday, March 13, to hear an American gardener describe what made his visit "across the pond" to Great Dixter so "great."
Randolph resident, Sid Jones, will share his lasting impressions about the "astounding beauty" and grandeur of the Great Dixter garden and estate located in East Sussex in the United Kingdom
"Dixter has a unique spirit," comments Jones, who over the years has attended four, week-long conferences at Great Dixter. "The understanding of gardening that I have gained there is immensely useful to me as a gardener in New Jersey."
An avid Morris County gardener for over 40 years, Jones enjoys "pushing the zone map" by creating micro climates enabling plants that typically grow in warmer climates to thrive in his garden. In spring and summer he particularly enjoys mixing tender perennials and tropicals into border plantings. When not tending their own garden, Jones and his wife, Marty, have become dedicated world travelers venturing to such far-off places as Bhutan, Nepal and India.
Jones is a graduate of Duke University and holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Purdue University. Before retiring, Jones held positions in product/business development and technical management at Celanese and Hoechst Celanese.
The lecture will take place at 10:00 A.M. at Frelinghuysen Arboretum's Haggerty Education Center, located at 53 Hanover Avenue in Morristown, New Jersey.

Matilda's Bunny Brunch and Fourteen Carrot Tea Party 1014

"Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were -- Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter." These are the creation of Beatrix Potter, who wrote her famous animal books in 1902 when Matilda Frelinghuysen was a child. Although The Frelinghuysen Arboretum does have rabbits in its gardens, they are not of the Beatrix Potter variety. But on March 19 you can learn about these garden visitors at the 8th Annual Matilda's Tea.
Rabbit Breeder Susan Prisco from Triple Creek Rabbits, Mendham, NJ, will speak about rabbits both wild and domestic. Several of the rabbit breeds, including Rex and Holland Lop, will be attending the party. Tea takers can then share an elegant tea with their favorite young person. Afterwards, each young party guest will make a springtime garden craft as everyone ushers in spring and chases the naughty outside rabbits away.

Medicinal Plants of the Civil War -- Exhibit & Cellphone Tour 1088
While the Civil War raged in America, Queen Victoria ruled in England. Victorian garden design featured many of the plants on exhibit here. After the Civil War, Americans turned their attention to their homes and incorporated many Victorian ideas into their gardens. Ferns and ivies, such as the ones hanging here, were a favorite of the times. Bedding plants were used extensively and the idea of setting out thousands of annuals in giant swaths of contrasting colors was known as "carpet bedding." Thinner plantings were called "ribbon bedding," an example of which, is growing here with white-flowered Impatiens.
This exhibit and cellphone tour runs from June through September. Click on the image at right to download the brochure filled with details.

This Autumn at the ARTboretum 1153
ARTboretum continues this autumn at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum as the visual arts come out to play for Halloween. Nelson Hancock's exhibit of charmingly evil cucurbits (that's pumpkins of all shapes and sizes) on the slate patio just outside the Haggerty Education Center is both whimsical and fascinatingly scary. Mr. Hancock, who teaches Visual Anthropology and Photography at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, has deftly carved a plethora of pumpkin and related gourds to keep our thorny and sharp edged succulents and agaves company through Halloween.
Bring your little trick or treater along in costume any day from Sunday, October 23 through Halloween for some great photo opps, inspiration with your own Jack-O- Lantern carving and a Halloween treat at our Front Desk!
