Volunteer Opportunities

At The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is a 127 acre tract of rolling terrain planted with collections of trees, shrubs and flowers for the education and enjoyment of the public. It also serves as the headquarters for the Morris County Park Commission. A Colonial Revival Mansion built in 1891 for George Griswold Frelinghuysen as a summer residence and known as Whippany Farm was donated to the Park Commission by his daughter Matilda E. Frelinghuysen in 1969 is now the Administration Building.

The Haggerty Education Center, opened in 1989, consists of two classrooms, a horticultural library and a multipurpose auditorium for lectures, exhibits and special events. A series of home demonstration gardens surrounds the building. The grounds also contain several walking trails as well as other gardens displaying an extensive collection of plant materials.

The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in cooperation with the Morris County Park Commission sponsor numerous programs. These programs include adult workshops, lectures, bus trips and a spring Plant Sale as well as children's gardening programs and elementary school workshops. Volunteers are absolutely essential to our operation. We could not function without our volunteers' help.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities for Photographers

We are looking to form a pool of photographers we can call on to photograph events at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum. A digital camera will be provided. Photography experience is helpful. Volunteers will be asked to take photos of speakers, the staff and volunteers working at these events, and of the attendees. These photos may appear in Arboretum Leaves, on our web site or used in local publications. Volunteer photographers will receive complimentary admittance to any event they cover. For more details call Marge Hulstrunk, Volunteer Coordinator, at (973) 631-5049 between 9:00am and 4:00pm Monday thru Wednesday to schedule an interview. Please be prepared to bring samples of your work.

Discovery Cart Volunteers

Botanic gardens worldwide use a variety of educational tools. A “Discovery Cart” is an increasingly popular tool for engaging garden visitors in conversations about plants. If you like talking with the public and have free time on Saturdays or Sundays, May through October— you might enjoy becoming a Frelinghuysen Arboretum Discovery Cart Docent. To learn more about The Frelinghuysen Arboretum’s participation in an international study of Discovery Carts through Botanic Garden Conservation International (www.bgci.org) and to volunteer as a Discovery Cart Docent please email Lesley Parness at lparness@morrisparks.net. Docents receive training, snacks and neat aprons to wear!

GardenWorks
Four Seasons Gardening

GardenWorks, the successful hands on volunteer gardening program sponsored by the Morris County Park Commission, invites you to join our team of gardeners.

Four seasons gardening is offered to anyone who enjoys being outdoors and working in the garden throughout the year. For three hours a week the horticulture volunteers are offered a unique experience working with and learning about plant material and what it takes to maintain a variety of gardens.

Both men and women are encouraged to join. It is a healthful way to have fun doing garden projects that are rewarding and it is an opportunity to get to know other gardeners with similar interests.

Tools are provided and scheduled workshops on sharpening tools, planting, pruning and general garden maintenance held throughout the year.

GardenWorks is also perfect for corporate and gardening groups as well.
