Pesto Anyone? Basil Tasting and Pesto Making Demonstration

RMG Demo Basil Trial

with Chef Cynthia Triolo

Saturday, August 29 - 1:00 PM

In person at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

THIS PROGRAM IS ELIGIBLE FOR 1.0 RUTGERS MASTER GARDENER CEU

Who doesn't love basil? Join the Friends as they host a basil tasting and pesto making demonstration on Saturday, August 29th.

The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Morris County are running a trial at several community gardens in our area of eight varieties of Genovese-style (pesto type) basil that have been bred to resist a devastating disease called Basil Downy Mildew. Vote for your favorite variety, see a pesto making demonstration and watch a 30-minute award-winning documentary called Fields of Devotion about the Rutgers basil breeding program.

PLANT SPOTLIGHT

She isn't bashful and completely owns her spot in the border, blooming pretty much continuously from late July through mid-August. Her name is Hibiscus moscheutos 'Mars Madness' (Rose Mallow) and she produces 6 to 8-inch wide, deep red flowers with a darker red center framed by wine-purple maple-like foliage.

She's a cold hardy perennial that can grow 4-6 feet tall by 4-6 feet wide. She thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Trim the dead stems to the ground early in spring once new shoots begin to grow. May need a little protection from late frosts.

She's a true show stopper!
