2026 Annual Tree Symposium

Saturday, November 7 - 9:00 - 3:30 PM

In person at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Join us for our Annual Tree Symposium, generously sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts.

This week we're featuring the fourth and last speaker in our distinguished lineup:

2:00 PM - Trees in the Landscape, Importance and Selection for our Community and the Environment, presented by Steven Kristoph

Trees are the backbone of the landscape. When properly planted and maintained, their value is measured both economically and aesthetically. The cooling shade they provide is a given, but some of the other benefits include reducing runoff, intercepting particulates, and providing habitat for migratory songbirds and other animals. What may be considered most important though, is their ability to sequester carbon for years or longer.

Emerald Ash Borer, Bacterial Leaf Scorch, Spotted Lantern Fly and now Beech Leaf Disease are wreaking havoc on some of our most popular and significant trees. It is time to look at what tree options there are for the landscape going forward.

The discussion will highlight trees that remain strong and worthy of continued use and some lesser-known species that are likely to play a key role in maintaining a beautiful, healthy and sustainable landscape.

Steven Kristoph owns and operates the Steven Kristoph Nursery in Millstone Township, NJ where he grows many types of ornamental trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials. Known for their expertise and quality, the nursery has become a trusted destination for gardening enthusiasts. Steven has also been an adjunct instructor at Rutgers for over 44 years.

Please note that the Tree Symposium has just been granted 4.0 CEUs by the New Jersey Arborists Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

BUS TRIP TO CHANTICLEER GARDEN

Our bus trip to Chanticleer Garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania last Friday could not have provided a better experience, even the weather cooperated: we enjoyed a perfect mid-70s, partly sunny day with no rain!

As we exited the bus, we were met by a Visitor Services representative who handed out maps and provided information on where to go to find picnic tables for lunch. We were also asked to return to the entrance for our 1:30 PM guided tour. Our tour guides were terrific, full of information about the property, the house and the horticultural staff.

The gardens were in their early fall glory with many plants blooming and just a hint of fall in the air: Anemone x hybrida 'Honorine Jobert' (Japanese Anemone or Windflower), Tricyrtis hirta (Japanese Toadlily), a fantastic looking pitcher plant, and a lovely floating flower arrangement were just a very few of the blooming plants we saw. Also the Chanticleer Hillside looking down toward the Serpentine and perennial gardens and a lovely garden bench created by one of the very talented Chanticleer gardeners.

Following the 1-1/2 hour tour, we had plenty of time to explore the property on our own. A tired but happy group boarded the bus and departed for the Arboretum at 5:00 PM.
