Gingerbread Wonderland

For all our “Friends” who attended Gingerbread Wonderland and enjoyed seeing that incredible Notre Dame cathedral exhibit, we want to let you know that it and its creators, the Roth-Rodgriguez family, will be featured on the Today Show on Tuesday, the 18th in the 9am hour. Congratulations to them on this outstanding achievement!

New Year's Party

Now is the time to register for the Friends New Year’s Party. You can do so on-line on our Events page. This annual event is a Membership Benefit.

If you are not yet a member, this is a perfect time to join the Friends. You can join or renew your membership on-line on our Membership page by clicking here.

The party features a lovely buffet, wine and great speakers. This year we are welcoming Drew Becher, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society! There will be also an exhibit of maps from the Rare Book Collection and lots of nice, plant lovers to converse with.

More January Events

January features some wonderful programs at the Arboretum, including:

The Library offers a rare chance to view books from centuries ago in Archetypes of the Botanic Literature. This class, given by Lesley Parness, Superintendent of Horticultural Education, will appeal to historians as well as plant lovers. We promise: you will be amazed!

December in the garden is about protection

Are all your clay pots indoors yet? If not, move them now to avoid damage this winter.

Apply winter mulches as soon as the ground has frozen. Salt hay, oak leaves, pine needles are generally all good choices. You may have shrubs that need winter protection, especially if they are located under your roofline. Stake and wrap them in burlap to prevent them from snow and ice.

Our next blast will have information about saving those poinsettias after Christmas! In the meantime, remember that they like a daytime temperature of about 70 degrees, don’t let them sit in water, and no feeding while they are blooming.

Arboretum Leaves December Issue

The new December issue of Arboretum Leaves is out – it’s filled with interesting classes and special programs for our Members. Explore them and register on line on our Events page.
