Saturday, July 28

Jane Hurwitz’s lecture describes which plants support which butterflies and what different butterflies require in the garden over the course of their lives. Sharon Wander, President of the North American Butterfly Association will take you on a walk after the lecture to see what butterflies can be found in the Frelinghuysen Arboretum’s gardens.

Thursday, August 9

Use bracket fungi to create beautiful earth-toned sheets of paper under the expert guidance of mycologist Dorothy Smullen.

This hands-on class will walk you step-by-step through the paper making process and introduce you to the many different mushrooms you can use for a variety of hues.

Saturday, August 11

Speaker Caren White, Master Gardener and member of the Herb Society of America, will teach you to look at herbs in a completely different way from the usual culinary and medicinal uses.

Learn how to use herbs to attract beneficial insects, repel pests, improve your soil and as companion plants in your garden.

Volunteer Treasurer for the Friends

Member, Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees

The Friends are looking for a Treasurer to work in a team environment with the bookkeeping contractor, as well as two part-time administrators and Board members, to manage accounting functions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining effective internal control environment
  • Ensuring compliance with reporting requirements & monitoring regulatory status
  • Leading Finance Committee
  • Coordinating with outside accountant for audit/tax filings
  • Managing the budget preparation process
  • Participating in decision-making and implementation of operational changes

This volunteer position requires an average of 6 hours/week and one board meeting/month.

Just a reminder that Membership in The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum entitles you to participation in The American Horticultural Society’s Reciprocal Admissions Program (RAP). The RAP offers free admission and/or additional benefits at over 300 gardens throughout North America and the Cayman Islands.
