2018 TREE SYMPOSIUM

TreeSymposium2018-th

Saturday, November 10

Fall is when trees come into their glory. Join us for a multi-faceted look at these critically important members of our ecosystem.

To lead off, Professor Tom Ombrello reveals the role of trees in history, as he tells us about the Historic Tree grove on the campus at Union County College. Willowwood’s Superintendent of Horticulture, John Beirne, will convince you that Magnolias should be your favorite tree. After lunch, Dr. Neil Hendrickson will offer timely information on the pests and diseases threatening our landscapes, giving us information to deal with these challenges to become effective stewards of the land. Last, but not least, author William Bryant Logan’s lecture The Thousand Year Wood: Our Enduring Reliance on Trees is about the long and intimate relationship between people and trees.

Bring a brown bag lunch, we’ll provide the drinks.

This program is eligible for 4.5 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s.

THE FLORA AND FAUNA OF THE HACKENSACK RIVER WATERSHED

TheFloraAndTheFauna2018-3-th

Thursday, December 13

Explore through pictures one of the Earth’s unique habitats: an urban wilderness, with Riverkeeper Captain Hugh Carola.

The Hackensack River watershed covers a 197-square mile area in northeastern New Jersey and southern New York. It is a place where humans and wildlife have learned to co-exist and flourish. The uppermost portion of the watershed is less developed than the highly urbanized lower portion, which comprises the Hackensack Meadowlands.

Don’t miss this rescheduled program on its new date, Thursday, December 13.

The program is eligible for 1.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s.
