Martha Brookes Hutcheson was the second female landscape architect in the United States and her property, Merchiston Farm, now called Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center, is part of the Morris County Park system. Her gardens have been restored and her design aesthetic is in evidence there, as it is in many gardens throughout the Northeast. She was a woman who bucked convention and was ahead of her time in so many ways. Her book, Spirit of the Garden, was re-issued by the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2001 and is still as relevant today as it was when it was first published in 1923 to rave reviews.

Join Professors Laura Lawson, Connie Webster, Anette Freytag, Kathleen John-Alder and Jean Marie Hartman of the Landscape Architecture Department at Rutgers University for a symposium about women in Landscape Architecture, past and present.

Bring a bag lunch. Drinks will be provided.

This program is eligible for 4.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEUs.

Participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count : February 14 – 17

Spend a few minutes this weekend doing something that’s fun – and that helps the birds. The Great Backyard Bird Count (a joint project of Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada) links ordinary folks with scientists in an effort to collect important data about backyard birds.

Spend just 15 minutes counting the birds you see anytime February 14-17. You can count from home, work, school, anywhere. Just make note of the birds you see then report your findings at Scientists will use your information to better understand important trends in bird populations, range expansions, habitat changes and shifts in migration patterns.

One of our Retail Partners, Wild Birds Unlimited is a founding and major sponsor of this annual event.

If you are a student in County College of Morris's Department of Landscape and Horticulture Technology, you may be eligible for a scholarship funded by the Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and the Watnong Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS).

To all our walkers, you may have noticed that progress is being made on the trail renovations. Some of the trails will open temporarily for a month or so, then be closed again for a couple of weeks for paving.

We are hoping all trails will reopen for good sometime between the middle and end of April.

Stay tuned and thank you for your patience!
