Events Next Weekend

Our calendar of Fall activities is quite full as you can see, but I thought I would mention two excellent programs coming up this weekend:

North Jersey Dahlia Society Dahlia Show

The North Jersey Dahlia Society, one of the Arboretum's affiliate organizations, will fill the Haggerty Education Center Auditorium with Dahlias of all sizes, shapes and colors this coming Saturday, September 25th, from 1:30p - 3:00p.

Plants of China: A Friendship and Peace Exhibit and Cell Phone Tour

The Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum are pleased to join UPS, Provident Bank Foundation and the Morris County Parks Commission in sponsoring Plants of China: A Friendship and Peace Exhibit and Cell Phone Tour.

Trip Details - Sept. 12, 2010 Presentation

We had a very nice group at this afternoon's presentation about the Friends 40th Anniversary Trip to Scotland. The gentle rain didn't seem to dampen any spirits-- probably the bagpipes and smoked salmon helped.

Here are links that will take you to the material presented today:

Updates Today

I am happy to pass on several bits of news today:

2011 Scotland Trip Meeting on September 12th

The Friends are sponsoring a trip to Scotland in May / June 2011 in celebration of our 40th anniversary. We will visit many public and private gardens, sightsee in the south of Scotland and attend Garden Scotland, their big garden show of the year.

All the trip details will be discussed at an event at the Arboretum on Sunday, September 12th from 2pm - 4pm. Food, bagpipes, slides and more!

Space (and food) is limited, so call to reserve a space at the meeting.

Scotland Trip Itinerary

map_of_scotland-thThe Friends turn 40 next year and have put together a trip to Scotland in celebration. We will focus on the south of Scotland, an area of wide-ranging climate. The gardens are equally diverse displaying everything from tropical to alpine.

Northwest New Jersey's Skylands

The Northwet corner of New Jersey is filled with diverse geography, picturesque towns, parks and varied activities. Our friends at (who list many of the Friends' activities) would like to call attention to their site which provides maps, tour guides and event calendars for the region.

August Activities

The gardens are taking on the late-summer greens. Volunteer Phil Dahlen notes the Arboretum "is still beautifully clothed in many flowers." See his latest update of What's in Bloom" here on the site.

Our latest email newsletter went out a few days ago (if you are not signed up for it, click here to find out how). Here are three of the highlighted events:

Abundant Midsummer Blooms

The recent rain helped the plants at the Arboretum put on extra blooms for our viewing pleasure. Volunteer Phil Dahlen sent me his bi-weekly update of the In Bloom list, so take a look at the list and come on to the Arboretum one morning before it gets too hot!

Enjoy your summer.
