Announcements as of January 9, 2019We know everyone’s schedules are busy, so walk-ins to the speaker programs are welcome. However, early registration will guarantee you a seat and will help us plan.MEMBERS ONLY NEW YEAR’S PARTYThe Botany and History of Holiday Desserts Lecture by Dorothy Smullen Sunday, January 13 (Snow Date - Sunday, January 20)Do you know what is in your fruit cake, mince pie and plum pudding? You’ll enjoy learning the history and understanding the botany of these traditional holiday desserts. Recipes will most definitely be included with Dorothy’s talk. Dorothy has been a nature and garden club speaker for 35 years. She is a retired high school science teacher, a teacher/naturalist at NJ Audubon, past president of NJ Mycological Association and a former board member of the Friends of Great Swamp National Refuge. Following Dorothy’s talk, please join us for refreshments. BENJAMIN BLACKBURN SCHOLARSHIP LECTURESaturday, February 2 (Snow Date: Sunday, February 3) Since 1979, the Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum have supported horticultural education through a scholarship named for Dr. Benjamin Blackburn. This year’s Blackburn Lecture speaker is Dr. Joan Maloof. Dr. Maloof’s lecture, Speaking for the Trees: The Importance of Old-Growth Forests, is not only timely but fascinating and incredibly important. Dr. Maloof is Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University and founded the Old-Growth Forest Network to preserve, protect and promote the country’s few remaining stands of old-growth forest. Dr. Maloof spends her time lecturing, writing, visiting forests, assisting private landowners and supporting local groups trying to protect community forests from development. Dr. Blackburn was a professor of Botany at Drew University. He published many articles and wrote a number of books on gardening as well as being the host of a very popular radio gardening program. He generously shared his vast knowledge and deep love for horticulture with many staff members in the Horticulture Division and with his countless fans, members of the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and area garden clubs. Admission fees support the scholarship that is offered to students in the Landscape and Horticultural Technology Program at County College of Morris. This scholarship allows interested students the opportunity to explore the different horticultural, environmental and design studies offered through the accredited CCM program. The increased knowledge the students acquire in the classroom and through hands-on programs at CCM will benefit them as they enter their chosen field in horticulture and landscape design. A book signing and light refreshments follow the talk. This program is eligible for 2.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s. Click our flyer for details and registration. FIG TREES CARE AND MAINTENANCE Sunday, February 17Growing figs in New Jersey is a challenge, but Bill Muzychko has developed a system that not only extends the growing season but also encourages rapid growth. Learn how he does it and how to best care for these beautiful trees. This program is eligible for 1.5 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about how you can fit in and also be one of the first to sign up because registration for volunteers opens that weekend. No registration is required for this free event, just stop by the Auditorium at the Haggerty Education Center on Saturday, January 19 at 11:00 AM. Hope to see you there!
