Announcements as of January 16, 2019We know people’s schedules are busy, so walk-ins to the speaker programs are welcome. However, early registration will guarantee you a seat and will help us plan.BENJAMIN BLACKBURN SCHOLARSHIP LECTURESaturday, February 2 (Snow Date: Sunday, February 3) Since 1979, the Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum have supported horticultural education through a scholarship named for Dr. Benjamin Blackburn. This year’s Blackburn Lecture speaker is Dr. Joan Maloof. Dr. Maloof’s lecture, Speaking for the Trees: The Importance of Old-Growth Forests, is not only timely but fascinating and incredibly important. Dr. Maloof is Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University and founded the Old-Growth Forest Network to preserve, protect and promote the country’s few remaining stands of old-growth forest. Dr. Maloof spends her time lecturing, writing, visiting forests, assisting private landowners and supporting local groups trying to protect community forests from development. Dr. Blackburn was a professor of Botany at Drew University. He published many articles and wrote a number of books on gardening as well as being the host of a very popular radio gardening program. He generously shared his vast knowledge and deep love for horticulture with many staff members in the Horticulture Division and with his countless fans, members of the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and area garden clubs. Admission fees support the scholarship that is offered to students in the Landscape and Horticultural Technology Program at County College of Morris. This scholarship allows interested students the opportunity to explore the different horticultural, environmental and design studies offered through the accredited CCM program. The increased knowledge the students acquire in the classroom and through hands-on programs at CCM will benefit them as they enter their chosen field in horticulture and landscape design. A book signing and light refreshments follow the talk. This program is eligible for 2.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s. Click our flyer for details and registration. THE STATE OF INVASIVES IN NEW JERSEY WITH MICHAEL VAN CLEF, PH.D. Tuesday, February 26Michael Van Clef is the owner of Ecological Solutions, LLC and serves the NJ Invasives Strike Team as Science Director. He has a Ph.D. in ecology from Rutgers University and over 20 years of experience in land stewardship, planning and research, working extensively in the evaluation and management of rare and invasive species. He has consulted with over 30 organizations in NJ, including the NJ Invasive Species Council for which he prepared the New Jersey Strategic Management Plan for Invasive Species. In this lecture, Dr. Van Clef provides insight and an update on New Jersey’s invasive species, something we should all be aware of. This program is eligible for 1.5 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s. Click our flyer for details and registration. BUS TRIP WITH THE FRIENDS TO THE 2019 PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW: FLOWER POWER! Tuesday, March 5 – Bus leaves the Arboretum parking lot at 10:30 AM SHARP and returns at approximately 8:30 PMJoin the Friends on this ever popular and eagerly anticipated annual trip. This year experience the power of flowers to convey some of the strongest human emotions. “Flower Power … the Power of Flowers!” pays tribute to the enormous impact of flowers on our lives. This year’s special events include the FTD World Cup 2019 design competition, the interactive Butterflies Live! Exhibit featuring 1,000 live butterflies and their native host plants, and a Garden Tea experience. As always, the show will have abundant fabulous floral and landscape displays. Chat with garden experts and watch educational demonstrations in the Gardener’s Studio. Enjoy observing fun-filled competitions in the Designers Studio and shop acres of vendor booths in the Marketplace. Take in hundreds of award winning plants in the PHS Hamilton Horticourt. Enjoy lunch, tea and/or dinner on your own at the show or nearby Reading Terminal Market. We need volunteers in a variety of roles starting now, not just on the sale days, so if you’d like to find out more about what it takes to get ready for this big, fun event each year, come to a brief presentation by the Plant Sale team about what goes on behind the scenes before, during and after the sale. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about how you can fit in and also be one of the first to sign up because registration for volunteers opens that weekend. No registration is required for this free event, just stop by the Auditorium at the Haggerty Education Center on Saturday, January 19 at 11:00 AM. Hope to see you there! THE FRIENDS MEMBERS ONLY NEW YEAR’S PARTY A wonderful afternoon was had by all who attended this annual event for Members of the Friends on Sunday, January 13. Dorothy Smullen gave a most interesting talk on The Botany and History of Holiday Desserts, which was followed by a delicious array of finger foods, both sweet and savory.
