Jazzy containers are the jewelry of a garden, elevating it from good to great! Learn how to brighten shady spots with pops of color, create focal points for vistas and welcoming entry gardens with stunning container groupings. Professional Floral Designer Marge Hulstrunk will demonstrate several different topiary designs that you will be able to re-create for your home or special event, using a variety of materials.

She’ll share tips and show you how to make styles suitable for many occasions throughout the year, from casual to formal. We know you’ll feel confident about making your own topiary at the end of this demonstration.

There will be a raffle afterward, and lucky winners will be able to take one of Marge’s creations home.

CREATING A SUCCESSION OF BLOOM IN THE NATIVE GARDEN

If you want to attract and support pollinators, a succession of bloom is an absolute imperative in any landscape. From early spring through late fall, different species of pollinators look for different types of plants at different times of the year. And, some plants are much more useful to pollinators than others.

Is your garden ready? Learn from Kim Eierman what you need to know to make your garden beautiful and ecologically supportive throughout the growing season with great choices of natives.

Kim is an Environmental Horticulturist specializing in ecological landscapes and native plants. She teaches at the New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden and around the metropolitan region.

Job Opening: Part-Time Administrative Assistant

(Paid, not volunteer)

The Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum are looking for a part-time Administrative Assistant. This position handles clerical functions for program registrations, and organizational and affiliate memberships; maintains Board correspondence and files; and responds to inquiries from the public about activities at the Arboretum. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience working with the public are required.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented self-starter with excellent people skills. The work schedule is 3 days per week, with occasional weekends/evenings.

OPEN SPACE COMMUNITY CONFERENCE

Sunday, June 2 – 1:00 to 5:00 PM

Community Conference at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

Topics will include native plant (and rain) gardening/alternatives to invasive species. It will also include how to form 'local Strike Teams', which are groups of volunteers dedicated to the protection of their local natural areas – this will involve the experiences of champions for Great Swamp and Watchung Reservation.
