GARDEN THOUGHTS

Thankfully, during these days of isolation, one of the things that we can still do is garden. Not only is it a healthy outdoor activity you can do alone, it also provides the opportunity for meditation and therapeutic tasks. There's nothing more rewarding than spending a day in the garden, especially in the spring when all our plants are waking up!

March is the beginning of our gardening season, so get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cuting back winter shrubs and general tidying up in your perennial beds, by raking out the last of the fall leaves that have nestled in among your plants.

Things to do in March include:

  • Protecting new plant shoots from slugs
  • Lifting and dividing overgrown perennials
  • Redesigning some of your garden areas
  • Cleaning out bird baths and providing fresh water for our feathered friends
  • Cutting back ornamental grasses, Liriope, Nepeta, etc.
  • Weeding and mulching your perennial beds
  • Pruning bush and climbing roses
  • Refreshing your outdoor planters with some perky Pansies, they love the cool spring weather!

A lot of the garden centers are staying open, so you can purchase plants, mulch and other gardening needs.

Following are a few local garden centers and their hours of operation:

Agway of Morristown
176 Ridgedale Avenue
Morristown, NJ
973 538-3232
Their hours are 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM

The Farm at Green Village
403 Green Village Road
Green Village, NJ
973 377-8703
Their hours are:
Monday through Saturday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Sunday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Country Mile Gardens
1108 Mt. Kemble Avenue
Morristown, NJ
973 425-0088
Their hours are:
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, seven days a week

Also, the garden centers in Home Depot stores will be open. Check your local store to find out what their hours are.

Above all, don't despair and remember the words of Marcel Proust who said: "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes", so get out in your garden and discover it all over again!
