All vegetable gardeners know that at this time of year zucchini can tend to take over the garden. Even though they might diligently peer under the large leaves on a daily basis, looking for those that are ready to harvest, some always seem to escape notice and grow to monstrous proportions! Other times the plants are so productive that you don't know what to do with all that squash. That's why “National Sneak a Zucchini Onto Your Neighbors' Porch Day” was created by radio host Tom Roy. This humorous holiday is celebrated each year on August 8th.
For a unique way to celebrate, join the horticulture education staff at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum on August 5 from 1 to 4 pm for the 2nd annual Zucchini-Palooza, a fun-filled event centered around this versatile veggie! Create and race zucchini cars, design unique art at a “Zucchini Baby” station, or try your hand at the Squash Toss game to see if you can hit the target and win a prize. Then try out the Zucchini Catapult to see the squash fly! Learn how to grow summer squash, save the seeds, and plan for next year's garden or make your own Zoodle salad with a vegetable spiralizer. Tour the Vegetable Gardens and ask the gardeners for tips, or try your hand at the squash-themed scavenger hunt.
Admission is $2 per person and no preregistration is necessary.
