MINI-FOREST REVOLUTION: REWILDING OUR COMMUNITIES FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE
with Hannah Lewis

Wednesday, November 5 - 7:00 PM

VIRTUAL VIA ZOOM

What supports hundreds of species, is many degrees cooler than its surroundings, soaks up stormwater, is co-created by children and their elders in spaces no bigger than a tennis court, and becomes maintenance free within a few years? A natural, native "mini-forest" planted using the Miyawaki Method, of course. Hannah will discuss what a mini-forest is, what it can do for your neighborhood, what goes into planting one, and why people all over the world are organizing their communities to plant mini-forests in the spaces around where they live and work.

Hannah Lewis is the author of Mini-Forest Revolution: Using the Miyawaki Method to Rapidly Rewild the World (Chelsea Green 2022), which was translated into French, German, and Italian, and is the 2023 winner of a Nautilus Book Award. Hannah has an MS in Sustainable Agriculture and Sociology from Iowa State University and a BA in Environmental Studies from Middlebury College. She lives in Minneapolis, where she works for the non-profit Renewing the Countryside to build sustainable local food systems and plant mini-forests.

If you are registered to attend the 2025 Tree Symposium on Saturday, November 8, you can register for Hannah's program for free. If you are not registered for the Tree Symposium, the program fee is $10.00.

Beginning at 9:00 AM with registration, coffee, welcome and the opportunity to purchase plants from Coldwater Pond Nursery and Steven Kristoph Nursery.

Last week we focused on Ted Szczawinski and his talk on Hazardous Tree Identification. This week we're focusing on:

Current and Future Threats to Urban Trees and Shrubs, Kevin Chase

The focus of this talk will be on two recently established pests - box tree moth and beech leaf disease. Both pests are plant killers and are spreading rapidly. The biology, spread and management of each pest and disease will be discussed. Additionally, we will discuss a new canker and leaf spot affecting American and European hornbeam.

Kevin conducts entomological research on a variety of tree and shrub insect pests across North America, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Some of the major insect groups Kevin works with are scale insects, invasive caterpillars, bark beetles and wood boring insects. Kevin is also involved in trialing biological control agents and safer products for both human applicators and non-target insects.

Based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Kevin’s applied research focuses on integrated pest management of ornamental pests on the urban landscape. He researches how biological control can be used in plant health care programs as well as how to manage new invasive insect pests as they move across the globe. Kevin holds a Master of Science in Forest Entomology from Mississippi State University, a Doctor of Philosophy in Ecology from University of Canterbury, New Zealand and a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Forest Entomology from the University of Minnesota.

FRIENDS BUS TRIP TO LONGWOOD GARDENS

Our bus trip to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA was last Wednesday. An enthusiastic group of travelers boarded the bus at the Arboretum and by 10:00 AM we were on our way, looking forward to a day visiting the lovely grounds at Longwood Gardens. We had some rain, but didn't let that "dampen" our spirits; the gardens were at their peak, the fountain shows were lively, the new West Conservatory (an innovative, exuberant masterpiece celebrating the world's Mediterranean landscapes), the Roberto Burle Marx Cascade Garden, the Bonsai Courtyard and the Idea Garden didn't disappoint. After some last minute shopping, we boarded the bus, a tired but happy bunch, looking forward to the relaxing trip back to New Jersey.

Thanks to Judy Snow for the group photograph, the photo of the Italian Water Garden and a photo of a giant sunflower in the Idea Garden, with a couple of travelers for scale! My photos show part of the New West Conservatory, an elaborate grouping of potted plants, mostly annuals, and a photo of a yellow and purple flower border, including salvia, coleus and marigold.
