The year drips its life slowly away from
naked trees where rain hangs in crystal
drops. The days are short and seem bereft
of light. Yet there are times when winter's
beauty cannot be denied and trees in their
dark tracery are etched against the cold
blue sky. If the sun shines, the world of
nature, sleeping, seems to stir and almost
to wake and life again.

Squirrel Bandits Beware

Squirrels - Fight 'Em or Feed 'Em, with Jim Walker

Sunday, January 11 - 1:00-3:00 PM

In person at the Haggerty Education Center

Discover the playful, and sometimes pesky, world of backyard squirrels in this fun and informative talk. Jim will explore their habits, the challenges they create for bird lovers, and clever ways to either deter or delight them at your feeders.

Wild Birds Unlimited

Jim Walker is the owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Denville, New Jersey, where for the past six years he's been helping people bring the joy of bird feeding and nature to their backyards. An avid outdoorsman and lifelong bird and nature enthusiast, Jim spent 25 years in the corporate world before turning his passion for the outdoors into his profession.

Following the program, we'll celebrate with our usual spread of delicious savory and sweet treats, accompanied by coffee, tea and wine. The event is free for members, but you must register as attendance is limited to 100 people.

Bus Trip with the Friends to the Philadelphia Flower Show

Tuesday, March 3 - 10:00 AM - 8:30 PM

PHS 2026 Flower Show

The theme for the 2026 Philadelphia Flower Show is "Rooted: Origins of American Gardening". This theme celebrates the traditions, memories, and cultural stories that have shaped American gardening practices. The show will explore the personal stories and horticultural inspiration that connect people to nature, from the nostalgia of grandparents' gardens to present-day community gardening.

Join the Friends on this always popular and highly anticipated trip. Chat with garden experts and watch how-to gardening demonstrations in the Gardener's Studio, shop acres of vendor booths brimming with merchandise in the Marketplace and enjoy lunch on your own at the show or at nearby Reading Terminal Market.

Bird Haven Farm: The Story of an Original American Garden, with Janet Mavec Saturday, February 7 - 1:00 PM (Snow Date: Sunday, February 8)

In her presentation, Ms. Mavec will tell us all about Bird Haven Farm, how her 100-acre farm is set among rolling hills and woodlands, replete with a picturesque old barn, spring-fed pond, century-old orchard and a stone house. Janet's new book, Bird Haven Farm: The Story of an Original American Garden tells the story of the transformation of this historic property into a vibrant and evolving garden paradise and explores the design principles implemented by Spanish landscape architect, Fernando Carruncho.
