We know people’s schedules are busy, so walk-ins to the speaker programs are welcome. However, early registration will guarantee you a seat and will help us plan.


2019 FRIENDS PLANT SALE

Members Only Shopping: 4pm - 7pm Fri May 3.

The Plant Sale Team is putting the “Party” back into the Members Only Friday evening shopping event with live Light Jazz brought to us by the popular Back2Rock Music School in Denville. They’ve also found amazing door prizes from our Retail Partners and there may even be some things for you to sip and nosh on while pondering whether you can get all those plants into your car in one trip. But no worries there either, we will hold your plant purchases until Saturday morning for you!

So, there is absolutely no reason to restrain your plant lust and have a great evening out at the Arboretum! Register here for this special, Members Only shopping event!

The 2019 Plant Sale: 9am - 4pm on Sat May 4 and Sun May 5.

There will be an amazing selection of vegetables, herbs, annuals and tropicals, perennials, trees and shrubs and lots of plant advisors on hand to answer questions and recommend which plants will work best in your garden. The full list of over 500 varieties is available on our Plant Sale page along with stories about many of the plants at the sale, with more posted daily!

Steve Kristoph, Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University and owner of an eponymous specialty nursery in central New jersey, returns with a fun and informative talk about small trees and shrubs, both native and non-native, that will be well-behaved and dazzle throughout the seasons in your garden. Many of the plants he recommends will be available at the plant sale the following weekend.

This program is eligible for 1.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s.

HARBINGERS OF SPRING BUS TRIP TO THE MT. CUBA CENTER

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a bus trip to Mt. Cuba Center in Hockessin, Delaware. Renowned for its spectacular displays of wildflowers and native plant research, Mt. Cuba Center will be in its peak spring bloom just in time for our visit. Rejoice in the extensive trillium collection, dogwood paths, lilac allees, slopes of wild columbine and other spring ephemerals. Our knowledgeable tour guides will help us understand the pivotal role native plants play in our environment. Get ready to be wowed by one of the most fabulous displays of wild flowers in the Mid-Atlantic region. We’ll also visit an excellent nearby nursery, the Gateway Garden Center, for some fun plant shopping. If you are a member of the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, be sure to bring your membership card as members will receive a 10% discount at the Gateway Garden Center.

Eat a good breakfast and pack your lunch, we will provide drinks. Enjoy your lunch in a room reserved just for us.

Please wear closed shoes, suitable for uneven and muddy terrain.

5TH ANNUAL TUBBS LECTURE: VINCENT SIMEONE ON VERSATILE VIBURNUMS

The Tubbs Lecture at Willowwood Arboretum, generously sponsored by the Willowwood Foundation, honors the memory of Henry and Robert Tubbs. This year’s guest speaker, Vincent Simeone, is a renowned horticulturist, lecturer and author. He will share his expertise in planting and caring for Viburnums and give a guided walk through the Viburnum collection at Willowwood Arboretum.

This program is eligible for 2.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s.

Job Opening: Part-Time Administrative Assistant

(Paid, not volunteer)

The Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum are looking for a part-time Administrative Assistant. This position handles clerical functions for program registrations, and organizational and affiliate memberships; maintains Board correspondence and files; and responds to inquiries from the public about activities at the Arboretum. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience working with the public are required.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented self-starter with excellent people skills. The work schedule is 3 days per week, with occasional weekends/evenings.
