Tree Symposium

In case you've been wondering why we're dedicating this year's Tree Symposium exclusively to Conifers, the answer is that The Frelinghuysen Arboretum has recently been designated as a Reference Garden by the American Conifer Society (ACS) and we felt it was the perfect opportunity to toot our own horn, so to speak!

The Arboretum is the first and only garden in New Jersey to receive this honor, joining just five other gardens in the Northeast. The purpose of the ACS Reference Garden program is to provide public access to a wide variety of conifer collections throughout the United States. The Gardens serve as a place to study and learn about conifers, to provide ideas for using conifers in home gardens, and to educate gardening groups and the general public about growing conifers.

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is home to a total of 436 conifers representing 54 individual species and 108 different cultivars. Please be sure to register for the Virtual Tree Symposium and make time to visit the Arboretum and these magnificent conifers soon.

The Blue Atlas Cedar in front of the Mansion is just one of our very special treasures.

LIFE IN THE STUDIO AND GARDEN with Frances Palmer

Thursday, October 14 - 7:00 PM

VIRTUAL ZOOM PROGRAM

Frances Palmer has been a potter and gardener for over 33 years and is known for her handmade functional ceramics. Her pieces have been carried by a variety of stores, including Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman and the Philip Johnson Glass House. Her work has also been featured in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Martha Stewart Living and House & Garden to name just a few. She lives and works in Weston Connecticut.

In her lecture, Frances will discuss her ceramics, informed by her Art History training and what inspires her work in earthenware, terracotta and porcelain. Adjacent to the studio are two large cutting gardens, which provide a continual flow of flowers for Frances' photography. All three aspects of her practice combine to produce her art.

In October 2020, Frances' first book, Life in the Studio, was published by Artisan Books. It comprises essays describing her ceramic and garden processes as well as her philosophical ideas about making a creative life.

AUTUMN COMES TO THE FRELINGHUYSEN ARBORETUM

The brilliant colors of Autumn are beginning to make their annual appearance in subtle ways; from the brilliant red Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' leaves (Hybrid Witch Hazel) to a single, muted pink leaf on an Oak Leaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia).

Another sign of Autumn at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is the annual Scarecrows in the Garden exhibit. This year, the Friends created a scarecrow to join the many other creations on display - from ghoulish to whimsical you'll enjoy the exhibit, which runs for several weeks this fall.
