AMERICAN CONIFER SOCIETY OFFER

You may recall that the Frelinghuysen Arboretum is now a Reference Garden for the American Conifer Society (ACS). This year the ACS annual meeting takes place near Philadelphia, September 15-18. The ACS is extending an offer to the Friends to get a free one-year membership ($40) if you attend the meeting. The daytime program consists of guided visits to public and private gardens with significant conifer collections, including Chanticleer and Morris Arboretum. Bill Thomas, Director Emeritus of Chanticleer, will speak on Thursday evening. On Saturday evening there is an auction of rare and unusual conifers and on Sunday there is a parking lot sale of small conifers that members will bring.

Click on the brochure for more details. The early-bird pricing ends July 15, so if you're interested, don't delay!

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER A WATER FEATURE FOR YOUR GARDEN with Dr. Alexander Grimwade

Tuesday, September 27 - 7:00 PM -- NEW DATE

VIRTUAL ZOOM PROGRAM

A garden water feature can be anything from a birdbath to a large Versailles-type installation with sculptures and fountains. Whatever the size or type you choose, it will dramatically alter your landscape, broaden the palette of plants you can cultivate and enhance your garden for wildlife. Dr. Grimwade will consider the ideal site for a pond, styles of construction, equipment, plants and maintenance. Regardless of the style and size of your garden, there is a water feature for you!

Alexander (Sandy) Grimwade has been an avid, life-long gardener in Britain, the Netherlands and the United States, and currently serves as webmaster for the Delaware Valley Water Garden Society (DVWGS). He has constructed his own backyard pond and advised DVWGS members and many others on construction and management of their water features. Sandy is a Penn State Master Gardener and a volunteer guide and plant advisor at Pennsylvania Horticultural Society events.

This program is eligible for 1.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU.

TODAY AT THE FRELINGHUYSEN ARBORETUM

The sunny beds flanking the entrance to the Haggerty Education Center have been planted differently this year with a "hot" combination of tropical plants, including Aechmea blanchetiana 'Hawaii" (Bromeliad), deep red Coleus spp, bright orange Marigolds (Tagetes) and delicate Tassel Flowers (Emilia spp). It makes for a striking arrangement, especially when planted in front of the dark green hedge behind. Visit and see for yourself!
